Chester Washington Golf Course - PGA/Esteban Toledo

Overview

In cooperation with The First Tee Program and the PGA Tour of America, Chester Washington Golf Course was honored to have PGA Tour player Esteban Toledo appear and teach basic fundamentals of the golf swing to todays future golfers. Mr. Toledo provided tips on how to play different kind of shots, proper set up on using the driver for long distance and most importantly to remind the children to follow the rules of golf and stay in school. After his demonstrations, Mr. Toledo brought a few children out from the audience for some quick one on one lessons and answer any questions that they may have had. After the conclusion of Mar Toledo's exhibition, Dennis Walters provided some laughter with his special talent for trick shots with the audience and remind all of us that a handicap shouldn't stand in the way of a young persons dreams and goals.

Preparation

The exhibition was only held on #1 Tee but the surrounding areas were manicured and detailed more then normal. The tee box was cut with a walk behind mower for the straightest of lines, the fairway was cut with a triplex and all other areas were fertilized in advance for the best possible conditions. This exhibition was going to be on local and national TV for this was the week of the Nissan Open being played at Riveria Country Club and pieces of this event would be televised so I wanted everything perfect for the media.

In Conclusion

The main goal of this event was for the children, to teach them something about the game of golf that may not have known when the day started. In looking back I think I learned just as much if not more on preparation for a 2 hour event then I did before. My responsibility of providing green turf and perfect amenities is rather easier in comparison to having everyone on the same page at the same time, it is so important for a golf course operation to run effectively and smoothly during a event like this. After the bleachers and crowd were gone the benefits of the event lasted for months. Rounds played increased, more outings were scheduled and pride of our golf course rose to an all time high.
