Unused area that will become a new teeing ground

Once the existing poa/bermuda based sod was striped, the area was rototilled to break up thatch while new soil was incorporated to create a healthy rootzone for the new Bermuda sod.

Now that the new tee has taken shape, the laser device is dragged over the tee to help level out low/high spots. Additional soil and sand are brought in to help raise low corners. The tripod on the slope is actually the laser that sends a signal to the operator which adjusts the leveling box behind the tractor automatically.

Once the surface is level, the entire area is sodded with hybrid Bermuda Within a few days this area will first be rolled to insure the entire area is flat and topdressing sand broadcast to fill in any edges and small depressions. Once the sod has established it will be mowed and open to the membership for use.

Golf Course Tees

In addition to the driving range tee being constructed, tees on the golf course were laser leveled as well. Many of the same steps were taken from start to finish to improve each tee. The following series of pictures will show the complete process that was needed to level the tees.

Most all the tees on the course had crowned surfaces, unlevel corners and aimed in the wrong direction.

Once the tee and surrounding area was striped, a tractor mounted rototiller broke up the soil to allow better drainage and water through the rootzone while leveling the general area. Additional soil and sand was brought in to allow the laser machine enough room to create a large enough area for a level tee that blended in to the surrounding teeing area.

With the laser leveling task complete, it was time to realign the tee to the fairway. This was done by first stringing a center line to the projected landing area in the fairway. To create a square tee, additional strings were lined up in 90 degrees to the center line to achieve either front or back edge of the tee. Lastly, the right or left edges was strung in the 90 degree manner to insure a square tee. Once the tee was equal in distance from corner to corner the strings were painted over and removed leaving a perfectly square tee box that is ready to be sodded.

To make sure that tee surface was perfectly square to it's outline, the teeing area was sodded first with hybrid Bermuda After this area was sodded the blue/ryegrass sod was added to complete the entire tee area. Before leaving the area the sod was heavily watered and roped off.

In conclusion

The task of making something good into something better requires time and careful thought. To have the opportunity to work on this project while working closely with my fellow coworkers was invaluable. It was a great feeling to accomplish a task like this knowing that our efforts saved valuable budget dollars, provided our membership with better playing conditions and working together as a team.
